This historic furniture protector from the Berlin Palace, dating from around 1880, comes from the courtly context of the imperial residence and is a particularly rare surviving testament to the representative interior design of the German monarchy. In rooms that were not regularly used, such textiles protected furniture from dust, light, and wear – a typical detail of royal domestic culture.

Made from red cotton fabric, the furniture protector displays a decorative pattern of light crowns, whose design includes fine details such as stars, circles, and floral elements. This symbolism clearly points to a monarchically influenced use and suggests a custom-made furnishing as part of the royal court decoration. The choice of colors – a deep red combined with light emblems – was typical for representative rooms in the Berlin Palace, the center of courtly representation under Kaiser Wilhelm I and Wilhelm II.

The furniture protector is preserved in very good condition and could originally have been used for a chair or small armchair. Due to their function and fragility, such pieces are now extremely rare and hardly found on the art market.
