Photos from the House of Hesse-Darmstadt during the Imperial Era – Nobility in the Mirror of History

The photographs from the House of Hesse-Darmstadt during the imperial era (1871–1918) depict members of the Grand Ducal family in representative moments: at court ceremonies, in uniforms, at social events, and in family circles. Particularly noteworthy are images of Grand Duke Ludwig IV (1837–1892) and his son Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig (1868–1937) , a patron of art and Art Nouveau, as well as of Grand Duchess Alice , daughter of Queen Victoria, whose humanitarian commitment continues to this day.

The photographs reflect the connection between Hessian aristocratic tradition and the Wilhelminian spirit. Locations such as the New Palace in Darmstadt , the Mathildenhöhe , and Wolfsgarten Palace served as backdrops for many of these images.
