Antique silver cigar box Duke Carl Eduard of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha | 800 silver | Court Jeweler Paul Jann
Exclusive silver cigar box with ducal monogram
This exceptional antique 800 silver cigar box is among the rare courtly luxury objects of the early 20th century. The box bears the hallmarks WTB, Paul Jann Gotha, the crescent moon and imperial crown as German national silver marks, as well as a magnificent, gilded monogram beneath a ducal crown.
The monogram is adorned with small gemstones, presumably diamond chips, lending the cigar box a particularly prestigious appearance. Inside, the box is lined with fine wood, serving not only as a smoking accessory but also as a high-quality display object.
Carl Eduard, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha
The crowned monogram refers to Carl Eduard, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1884–1954), the last reigning Duke of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Carl Eduard was a grandson of Queen Victoria of Great Britain and a cousin of Emperor Wilhelm II. Due to his close ties to numerous European royal houses, he was one of the most prominent noblemen of his time.
Objects bearing his personal monogram are extremely rare today and possess great historical significance within the history of German nobility and monarchy.
Court Jeweler Paul Jann and the Wilhelm Binder Silver Manufactory
The hallmark "Paul Jann, Gotha" refers to the renowned court jeweler of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Paul Jann held the title of Ducal Saxon Court Jeweler and supplied the courtly environment with high-quality jewelry and silverware.
The maker's mark WTB is attributed to the major silver goods factory Wilhelm Binder, Schwäbisch Gmünd. The collaboration between a leading German silver manufacturer and a court jeweler indicates that it originated in an elite courtly or upper-class milieu and underscores the high-quality provenance of this rare piece.
High-quality execution in 800 silver
The cigar box impresses with its elegant shape, high-quality workmanship, and the use of 800 silver. Particularly noteworthy are the gold monogram, the gold crown, and the decorative gemstone settings, which emphasize the representative character of the object.
The wooden interior lining served to protect and stylishly store cigars, and it attests to the high quality of the craftsmanship.
