On April 22, 1897 , Kaiser Wilhelm II arrived in Vienna for an official (and documented) visit. A few days later, he signed this original photograph "Wilhelm IR" (on April 28, 1897). It depicts the Kaiser in uniform. Kaiser Wilhelm II wore all uniforms—except the French. The uniform he is wearing here dates from the time of Frederick the Great.

The full-length photograph of the emperor was taken by J.C. Schaarwächter, royal photographer, Berlin W., Leipziger Str. 130. In the center, between the photographer's information, is printed: Photo Crayon. The imprint "Photo Crayon" on a photograph refers to a historical technique in which a photographic image was artistically enhanced with crayon (chalk, pencil, or pastel). This method was particularly popular in the 19th century and was used to make photographs appear like hand-drawn portraits.

The signed dedicatory portrait was presented with a frame. The frame was a gift of honor to a distinguished person or a member of the Austrian Imperial Family .

The large frame is made of brass and fire-gilt. It is framed by the relief chain of the Order of the Black Eagle, with Prussian eagles and the imperial monogram "W" in the corners. Crowned with the German imperial crown. With stand for display. Signed "CH Preetz Berlin W 8."

Very well preserved. Slight signs of age. The back of the photo has been replaced. Two pins for securing the picture in the frame are missing. Frames like these are now sought-after collector's items and have become very, very rare.
